Why do I home school? #11. Excellence.
I make my kids do chores. WHAT?!?!
That's right! I make no apologies for it either! It's my job to make sure they are capable of taking care of themselves once they leave my house and not to mention they help make the messes! Up until this year, they didn't get paid a dime for their contribution to taking care of our home because we are a family and everyone needs to help.
However, there are a few principles about money that I want them to learn about so starting this year they get paid a dime. Literally. A dime for doing their daily chores. In order to earn the dime the chore has to be done with excellence and within the time frame given. If not...no dime!
For example every Tuesday they clean their bathrooms: sink, toilet, sweep, take out trash, restock soap and toilet paper. The works! I walked them through each step the first couple times they were learning how to clean the bathroom, but after that it was all on them to pass my inspection. And I have high standards. There have been a few time they didn't get the dime, but most of the time they do. (Best dime I've ever spent! )
The " real world" principle is that one day they will have a boss who expects them to do a job well in order to earn a paycheck. If they can't or won't perform the task....they will be out of a job and money!
The Biblical principle comes from Ephesians 6:6-7 MSG Don’t just do what you have to do to get by, but work heartily, as Christ’s servants doing what God wants you to do. And work with a smile on your face, always keeping in mind that no matter who happens to be giving the orders, you’re really serving God.
Our work and the manner in which we do it is an act of worship to God. Let's worship Him with excellence!
