Why do I home school? #22. Stewardship.
Stewardship: the careful and responsible management of something entrusted to one's care.
We are so blessed in America. Sometimes I think we forget just how good it is. Most of us slept with a roof over our head, four walls around us, and AC units keeping us at the perfect temperature. We'll wake up to food in our cupboards and fresh running water. Cars will take us to jobs to earn money, grocery stores to buy food, or a friend's house for coffee. We also wake to God still being on His thorn.
Every. Single. Day.
I don't take any of it for granted and I'm trying to teach my children not to either. Every day we thank God for the many blessings we have. Out of my gratitude I want to take care of and be a good steward of all that the Lord has entrusted to me. So how does that translate into how I teach my children the character trait of stewardship?
Our Home -"This is the home the Lord has provided for us. I love our home! Let's take good care of it by cleaning it and using it to show hospitality to others."
Our Bodies - "This is the body the Lord has given you. It's the temple of God! Take good care of it by feeding it healthy food, drinking water and being active. Let's be good stewards of our hands and feet by helping others, not hurting others."
Our Family - "These are the people the Lord chose to be your family. I love our family so much! How can we treat each other in a careful and responsible way?"
Our Money - "The Lord owns it all. Let's be wise in how we tithe, save and spend our money. Being careful to not spend beyond our means, but also giving to those in need."
Future applications - "This is the spouse you have prayed for! Be a good steward of the marital relationship by taking care of the one entrusted to you. As a parent, be a good steward of the children the Lord gives you by training them up in the Lord."
Biblical truth - "Whoever can be trusted with very little can also be trusted with much, and whoever is dishonest with very little will also be dishonest with much." Luke 16:10
Lord, help us be good stewards with all that you entrust us with, so that you can trust us with more for Your Kingdom and Glory!
