Why do I home school? #28. Choosing Curriculum.

There are about as many options in curriculum as there are flavors of ice cream and depending on your perspective can either be a blessing or down right terrifying! I am asked often how I found the curriculum that I use so I've narrowed it down to my top two recommendations for how to choose curriculum if you are beginning your journey into home educating your children.

1. When I was preparing to start home schooling someone recommended that I purchase 101 Top Picks for Homeschool Curriculum by Cathy Duffy. She is kind of the guru, master reviewer of all home school curriculum. Her book included a couple of short quizzes to help me figure out what kind of teacher I was, what kind of student I had, and then based on my answers gave me the top recommendations for curriculum. And fortunately her suggestions worked for me and several other moms I know!

2. Sit down with a home school mom and look at all her curriculum. No doubt she will have a stash of things that worked, didn't work, various grade levels, and learning tools. Her personal experience and insight into the curriculum will be invaluable! You'll get a chance to look it over, ask questions, and think about whether it's a good fit for you and your family before you invest in learning materials.

Here is what I love about choosing curriculum.....I choose it. Not the government, state, or someone who doesn't know my child. I choose it specifically for each child and my family. I decide what they learn and at what age. It's my choice and I LOVE having that freedom!
